Brian Branch Could Realistically Play Sunday in Arizona

Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch took a major step toward returning to the field Wednesday, as the Pro Bowl defensive back returned to practice and officially opened his 21-day window to be activated from the PUP list.
Branch has been recovering from the Achilles injury that ended his 2025 season and has missed the first four games of the 2026 season. His return would be a significant boost for a Lions defense that has struggled mightily through the opening month.
Branch was listed as a limited participant in Wednesday's practice, and while it remains unclear whether Detroit will activate him in time to play against the Arizona Cardinals, the possibility appears to be more realistic than initially expected.
Sheppard: Branch Playing Sunday Is "Realistic"
According to Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit, Lions defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard was asked how realistic it is for Branch to play this Sunday in Arizona.
His response was certainly encouraging:
"If we were playing tonight, it'd be realistic."
That's a notable update considering Branch has been away from game action for nearly 10 months. Branch himself has also expressed confidence in his recovery, telling reporters that he feels good and is ready to go while acknowledging that he still needs to knock off some rust in practice.
A Much-Needed Boost
The timing couldn't be better for Detroit.
The Lions' defense has struggled significantly through four games, ranking last in the NFL in both passing defense and points allowed entering Week 5. Branch's ability to play multiple roles in the secondary, create turnovers and make plays around the football could provide an immediate boost to a unit searching for answers.
There's still a long way to go before Sunday, and the Lions could ultimately decide to give Branch more time rather than rush him back from such a serious injury.
But for now, the door is clearly open.
If Brian Branch continues progressing through practice this week, don't be surprised if we see No. 32 back on the field Sunday in Arizona.
